repurposing
At artist residency Joya: arte + ecología / AiR in Almeria, Spain, I explored ideas around home. The expansive location embedded in nature, allowed me to connect deeply to my surroundings. By collecting discarded objects and repurposing them into a rug, a symbolic object in many cultures that connect to the foundation of a home, I was able to build a sense of belonging to a seemingly foreign world. By weaving elements that were left behind, the objects themselves find a sense of meaning and home that had once been abandoned.
Joya: arte + ecología / AiR is an artist residency program located in the heart of the Parque Natural Sierra María – Los Vélez, Almería, Spain. This program is dedicated to fostering artistic creation within the context of sustainability, ecology, and the unique natural environment of Andalusia.
