Ojiichan

Ojiichan is an endearing name for grandfather. Despite not fully understanding my grandfather’s calligraphy as a child, the pure expression and evocative nature visually communicated something deeper. One that connects me to happy childhood memories and nostalgic summers spent in Tokyo. This piece is woven as an exploration of my valuable relationship with sumi ink and its powerful qualities that fuse both writing and emotion.

Woven on a 12-harness loom with organic cotton and wool tapestry. Featured in Brown University’s Visions Magazine Fall issue 2017.
